The Browning Foundation, through contributions and donations, will hold and administer certain funds that provide scholarship grants to individuals; thus, enabling the recipients to attend and pay towards an undergraduate or graduate education in the field of their choice and at an accredited college or university of their choice.
The Browning Foundation has established the following procedures pursuant to which scholarship grants will be awarded from funds where contributions and donations have been specifically provided for the award/scholarship recipients. The following procedures shall be interpreted so as to ensure the Browning Foundation’s compliance with all applicable requirements of the Internal Revenue Code and these procedures may be amended from time to time.
The Browning Foundation values and encourages the interest and involvement of donors to fund or establish Scholarship Grants or individual Achievement Awards. Such involvement may include developing criteria for awards and serving on grant selection committees.
The purpose of the Browning Foundation Scholarship Fund is to award three (3) $5,000 annual scholarship award to eligible applicants for the year 2018—2019.
We used the term “Scholarship Awards” to refer to grants that pay for applicants to attend an educational institution – a school that has faculty, a student body, a physical location and a curriculum. This could be a public or private college or university, or a vocational/trade school.
The candidates eligible for the monetary scholarship award must be:
The recipient must reside in the United States and be either a citizen or a valid Green Card holder and intend to continue their education at college or university. Consideration will be given to academic achievement and financial need.
The “Need Analysis” takes into consideration family income/size, the cost of attendance, and the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as calculated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial need can also be demonstrated by proof of receiving government assistance (disability income, etc.)
The following scholarship are available:
William H. Byrd Memorial Scholarship [Awarded to a first-year undergraduate student]Each scholarship award will be for $5,000 annually. Payments will be made to the academic institution.
Yes! Scholarships will be awarded on an annual basis and disbursed as a one-time payment on September 30th of the scholarship year. There are no GPA requirements to receive the scholarship. However, for re-application any subsequent award year, students must continue to attend classes and show “good class attendance” during the previous semester, while maintaining no lower than a 3.0 grade-point average (or equivalent).
There are no barriers to the field of study. The Browning Foundation believes that a diverse community should reflect the wide reaching and varied quality to compliment the multifaceted career choices of students.
Additionally, the award is inclusive to those students with a less than perfect background. Furthermore, no restriction or preference will be given to applicants of a particular sex, race, ethnic background or religion. The selection board will evaluate each application and on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants and grantees will be selected on an objective and nondiscriminatory basis.
The Browning Foundation reserves the right to impose additional, minor reasonable restrictions and/or requirements upon the awarding of the scholarship grants. Any substantial or material changes will be made only with the approval of the Browning Foundation’s Board of Directors.The application deadline is September 7 of the scholarship year (2018—2019).
The deadline is the date after which applications will no longer be accepted. The Browning Foundation uses the postmarked date to determine mailed entries.
No! Unless otherwise provided in the fund agreement establishing a Scholarship Grant, each award shall be paid by the Browning Foundation directly to the educational institution for the use of the scholarship recipient.
